The Buckaroo Square Knot: The Finishing Touch That Completes Your Look

A wild rag isn’t just a scarf, it’s a statement. It’s the final touch that separates a good outfit from a great one. And when it comes to tying it right, nothing gives that clean, professional Western finish quite like a buckaroo square knot

At Cowtown Wild Rags, we believe your wild rag deserves more than a simple tie... it deserves to be finished with tradition, confidence, and craftsmanship.

Why the Buckaroo Square Knot Matters

The buckaroo square knot is one of the most classic and respected ways to tie a wild rag. It’s a staple of the working cowboy, the rodeo rider, and the Western fashion world alike. More than just a knot, it’s a signature of pride and precision. It sits squarely at the center of your chest, holding its shape while showing off the full color and beauty of your scarf.

When tied correctly, the buckaroo square knot gives your wild rag structure and balance. It keeps the folds even, allowing the silk to drape smoothly and naturally. Whether you’re riding out on a chilly morning, stepping into a stock show, or dressing up for a night in the Stockyards, this knot brings the look together with confidence and polish.

Choosing the Right Scarf for the Knot

A perfect knot starts with a quality wild rag. That’s where Cowtown Wild Rags makes all the difference. Our scarves are made from luxurious 14mm silk, giving you just the right amount of body and glide to form a secure, elegant tie. Lighter scarves tend to slip or bunch up, but our premium silk holds its shape beautifully.

Every design is double-sided and full-color, so when you twist, fold, and tie your knot, both sides shine with equal vibrancy. No pale backsides, no dull edges... just rich detail that shows off your scarf from every angle. The colors and patterns stay bold, no matter how you style them.

How to Tie a Buckaroo Square Knot

Tying a buckaroo square knot might look fancy, but it’s surprisingly simple once you’ve practiced it a few times. Here’s how to master it:

  1. Fold your scarf into a triangle. Bring two opposite corners together to form a long triangle, then roll or fold it down until it’s about two to three inches wide.

  2. Wrap it around your neck. Hold both ends so they hang evenly in front. You can adjust the tightness depending on comfort or style.

  3. Cross the ends. Take the right end and cross it over the left, then cross them again.

  4. Find Where The Ends Meet. Take your finger and go to the two ends where they make a "V" - then use your finger as a lever for the end to go around that finger and up towards your chin.

  5. Bring the End Over. Bring the over from your chin straight down and you'll lock that end with your thumb. This is a key step!

  6. The Weird Reach Over. I call this the weird reach because you're going over the top of your hand and scarf to pick up that other end (watch the video for help.)

  7. The fabulous BUCKAROO SQUARE KNOT! Take the other end and follow your finger that has the scarf wrapped around it. You're going to wedge the silk scarf through the wild rag tunnel created. That's it! It might take a couple attempts, but once you can tie a buckaroo knot, you'll be showing others!!

It’s that simple... and that powerful. The square knot instantly gives your wild rag a finished, balanced look that feels timeless.

Professional Tips for a Polished Look

The secret to a clean knot isn’t just how you tie it... it’s also what you tie. Silk from Cowtown Wild Rags has a soft, natural sheen that makes each fold come alive with depth and texture. When the light hits it, you can see the richness that comes only from 14mm silk and double-sided printing.

For a classic Western finish, keep your tails even and your folds smooth. If you want a more relaxed ranch look, loosen the knot slightly and let the ends drape wider. Either way, your Cowtown Wild Rags scarf will stay bold, vibrant, and full of life. Plus, with our double-sided color, it won't matter how you tie it, that full color will always show it's best self giving you a timeless, complete look.

The Knot That Tells a Story

Every cowboy and cowgirl knows that the way you tie your wild rag says something about you. The buckaroo square knot has been around for generations... from the open range to the modern rodeo. It shows that you take pride in your craft, your gear, and your style.

At Cowtown Wild Rags, we’re proud to see our scarves tied in this timeless way. It’s more than just a knot... it’s the finishing touch that brings the whole look together. When you wear one of our silk scarves tied in a buckaroo square knot, you’re not just finishing an outfit... you’re carrying on a Western tradition built on pride, polish, and authenticity.
