How to Tie a Great Square Knot

A square knot is one of the most classic ways to tie a wild rag, yet it is often tied so that the actual focus piece (the square) is twisted. This step-by-step video will walk you through how to tie a classic wild rag square knot so that the knot is perfectly square.

Step by Step Wild Rag Tutorial - The Square Knot

  • First, you'll roll your wild rag into a long line of silk. You can do this starting at opposite corners and rolling toward each other...or you can fold into a triangle and roll from the small end to the large folded end.

  • Take the silk scarf (36" Wild Thunderbird shown) behind your head so that each end is on the left and right of you. Make one side longer. I'm right-handed, so I make the right side longer.

  • You can either remember "right over left, left over right" or you can follow as I'm showing in the video, take the longer end and cross over the shorter silk scarf end. Wrap around the shorter end and pull the longer end up toward your chin. This is a key step. If you don't pull the end toward your chin, you'll end up with a twisted knot.

  • Bring the wild rag end from your chin straight down. Cross the end over, going the opposite direction from the one you first used. Wrap around and pull through. This creates a perfect square for your square knot!
