What is a Wild Rag?

what is a wild rag

What is a wild rag? Sometimes, people who aren't familiar with the Western world or Western fashion, will ask, "Why would you call a silk scarf a rag?" This is a great question!

They are correct - it's not a "rag" as in when we think of a rag, we think of a cleaning rag. No, a wild rag is not that type of rag. "Rag" is the beloved, affectionate name for a silk scarf.

Some folks have never heard the term "wild rags".

The term “wild rag” has a long history, starting with the vaqueros wearing cloth for protection from sun, wind, dust, and rain while spending long hours in the saddle. The cloth was typically made from cotton or wool.

The cloth became known as a “rag” because it was used frequently in a hard life, and it took a beating from the weather elements, as well as being used as a handkerchief or bandage.

Eventually, vaqueros began to use silk. A silk scarf is not only strong, but it is also soft against one's skin. There's no chafing with silk, even if it's wet; the silk is the perfect natural fiber for working long hours. Little did we know that it would become a popular Western accessory, along with cowboy boots and a hat!

“Wild” became associated with the tough cowboys who wore the rags and could handle the wildest stock on a ranch. “Wild rags” is a way to honor our cowboy heritage, and we look upon the term with great pride.
